The Wedge-tailed Eagle,
is the largest bird of prey in Australia, and has a wing span of up
to 2.5 metres. This predator hunts reptiles, birds and mammals up to
the size of wallabies, although carrion forms a significant part of
its diet.
Eagles spend the hours before
sunrise and sunset at treetop level. The rest of the day is spent
perching, circling or gliding. This bird can soar to heights of
2,000 metres, for as long as 90 minutes at a time.
The female eagle lays one to three
white eggs, blotched with purple and brown. Both parents incubate
the eggs and feed the chicks.
